Welcome, friend:
High Spirits is a 3,000 sq.ft. log house in twelve
acres of rolling woods outside the village of Flat Rock, North Carolina. The
rustic character and large rooms were attractive to us, but we bought the house
mainly for its location. At 2,580' elevation in the Appalachian Mountains,
the view is wonderful, we're pretty cool most of the summer, and have only about
a month of unpleasant winter weather.
From the beginning we felt the house lacked
'curb appeal,' and would be more convenient with some interior changes. When we
bought it in 1996, the house hadn't been occupied for about ten years -- neglect
was obvious. Also obvious was the 'gonzo' greenhouse attached to the front. It
was removed during our first full summer. After that we began restoring the log
exterior. That has proved to be an enormous job, and should be finished this
year.
The recent sale of our Key West house, and
associated decision to live at High Spirits year-around, prompted us to
accelerate the renovation. With the guidance and imagination our architect, Bill
O'Cain; and the work of general contractor Chris Brothers, serious renovation
began April 20, 2000. Bill and Chris expect it to be finished during early
August. (We hope they mean this year.)
Here's the original floor plan. Clicking on a
room will take you to renovation photographs of that area. If your mouse doesn't
turn into a hand when in a room, that room is not being renovated. You can also
get to the photographs by clicking one of the links at the bottom of any
page.
